Ask Your Physical Therapist: Chiropractic, pills, shots don’t help with neck pain – Carlisle Sentinel

featured_button_text In my practice, I've seen numerous clients with neck pain who have tried shots, pills, rest and chiropractic treatment without any benefit. The bright side is that there are reasons that these treatments fail, and there is something that has outstanding success in solving neck pain and

symptoms that come along with it. The reasons why tablets, shots and the rest do not work long-lasting is due to the fact that they are not addressing the reason the neck discomfort is occurring in the first place. So, while these treatments can be valuable briefly since they deal with the signs you are having, long-term, they are not fixing what's triggering the neck pain.

Similarly, chiropractic treatment can be practical initially for some people, however it is only dealing with part of the reason for the neck pain– which is why lots of people who get chiropractic treatments end up seeing their chiropractic specialist for months or years, and then eventually the chiropractic treatments lose their effectiveness.

The reason for this is that many chiropractic doctors attend to inappropriate alignment of the neck vertebra by requiring the vertebra back into position (cracking your neck). While this can be helpful, the problem is that the muscles along your spine were made to support the alignment of your spine.

So, if you continuously require the vertebra into position, but don't reinforce the muscles that keep the spine in the position in which it was developed to be, the positioning of the vertebra just keeps coming out of position. This is why you see people that use chiropractic services return for months or years of treatment and finally discover that even that no longer helps their neck discomfort.

Physical treatment takes a various technique. We evaluate your neck and surrounding areas to discover what muscles are tight, which ones are weak, along the spinal column, along with what vertebra in the neck are out of position. We correct the vertebra alignment in the neck (much like chiropractic care) but then we by hand extend the muscles that are tight along the spinal column, and bring back strength to the muscles that are weak along the spine and surrounding locations.

Restoring the versatility and strength to the muscles that support the neck/spine is actually what keeps the neck vertebra in location. This keeps you from needing to return to see your physical therapist for months or years; you need to be finished with physical treatment within 4-8 weeks, and then as long as you stay up to date with the workout you are provided, you should not need to keep returning for physical treatment for months or years.
